Art exhibitions and fairs held in major cities around the world, though canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, can be good examples of events offering quality content. They provide visitors with various artworks for viewing. Yet even such events were considered somewhat insufficient, so art exhibitions and fairs offered additional programs. One of them is the so-called “curation” through docent-guided programs. Curation at the site is an important process for viewers to understand and appreciate artworks better.

This writer thinks curation is necessary not only in the art industry but also in the MICE industry including tourism, expositions, events, and conferences.

A case in point is Sydney Opera House. Visitors to this world’s finest venue can participate in docent-guided programs. The content covers many topics from the architectural work, planning and purpose, and history of past performances to behind-the-scene stories of the famous cast. A great number of people go to the Opera House to enjoy operas, but they should also enjoy this program while there. A slew of other well-known architectural works and unique venues offer similar programs to communicate with people.

Curation is also well-utilized not only in world-famous venues but also in trade exhibitions. Even at CES, one of the world’s top 3 IT and technology events, group tourists guided by docents who speak their language are seen everywhere roaming around the venue.

At the China Hi-Tech Fair in Shenzhen, China’s largest ICT exhibition, this writer took part in a curation talk show for participants and observers, who showed enthusiastic response. Curation programs covered a wide range of topics including the fair’s purpose, history, chronology, major participating corporations, corporations by ICT area, hot topic of the year, must-see corporations and more.

Such curated programs are utilized in the tourism industry as well. Corporations, institutions, influencers, and bloggers are pouring out information on the best eats and travels. In other words, every citizen out there is curating what he or she thinks is the best content.

If so then, how about MICE planners offer more constructively planned curation for participants? In fact, most tourist attractions in Korea come with a vast number of interesting stories that can be well-curated.

Garden of Morning Calm, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province

#Garden of Morning Calm, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province

This writer’s hometown is Gapyeong in Gyeonggi Province. When speaking of my hometown, I would say, “Have you seen the movie ‘Letter’? The place where Garden of Morning Calm is where I come from.” Nowadays, I’d say, “The place where the TV series ‘Lovely Horribly’ was shot is my hometown.” As its sales strategy, Garden of Morning Calm has actively promoted its content. Even its introduction page starts with its connection to entertainment: the garden was the backdrop of movies like “Letter” and “Addiction” as well as the TV dramas “Detective K,” “Love in the Moonlight,” “Smile Again,” “you’re Beautiful,” and “A Love to Kill” and the variety show “Infinite Challenge.” The garden offers plenty of content.

Lake Sanjeong, Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province

#Lake Sanjeong, Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province

When this writer takes his niece/nephew to Lake Sanjeong located in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, talks turn to the Korean drama “Dr. Romantic.” The parents would tell stories about the famous Pope Bread and the lake as well as delicious short rib barbeques sold in the Pocheon area. Content may change depending on who the listener is, working very well when perfectly customized.

Seoknamsa Temple, Anseong, Gyeonggi Province

#Seoknamsa Temple, Anseong, Gyeonggi Province

Seoknamsa Temple is a thousand-year-old Buddhist temple founded during the Unified Silla dynasty. The temple has recently performed a dedication ceremony celebrating the completion of the three-year-long restoration of the main Daeungjeon Hall. The ancient temple was also the backdrop of the 2016 TV drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.” This is the temple where, in the eighth episode, the immortal goblin Kim Shin (played by Gong Yoo) released a sky lantern and enshrined a mortuary tablet to wish for the happiness of Kim Sun and Wang Yeo. In the thirteenth episode, the temple was the place where the Grim Reaper, who thought he might be Wang Yeo, and Kim Shin who was enraged upon discovering the true identity of the Grim Reaper met and fought. The temple is a treasure trove of educational contents including popular K-drama, Korean Buddhism, and history of the United Silla dynasty.

Camp Greaves, Paju, Gyeonggi Province

As the world’s last divided country, Korea is full of unique contents that can go global. One of them is Camp Greaves located in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. When the camp became popular after it was used as the location of the Korean drama “Descendants of the Sun,” it has recently been designated as a tourist attraction with “national security” as theme. How about creating new content containing a global message of peace in addition to the tourist attraction promoting national security?

Haengnidan-gil, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

#Haengnidan-gil, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province

The Korean drama “The Uncanny Encounter,” which aired on the OCN cable network last year, featured a place very familiar to Suwon citizens. The café is one of the most popular ones on the street known as “Haengnidan-gil” in Suwon City. The main characters in the drama ward off evil spirits as undercover employees at a diner called “Sister’s Noodle.” The noodle joint where characters actively engaged in all sorts of activities is none other than this café.

Decorated with the so-called “Newtro” concept, the café became an Instagrammable hot place in Suwon sought after by locals and tourists alike.

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province
#National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Seoul Zoo in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi province cannot be missed. They are not connected by all means, but people who are old enough to remember the movie “Art Museum by the Zoo” released in 1998 might feel nostalgia for the two places. I really hope they will create healing content specially customized for the Generation X, caught between the Millennials and the older generation.

Covering a vast area surrounding Korea’s largest metropolis, Gyeonggi Province contains lots of tourism resources. Such great strength can surely translate into curated programs including tours around all the content covering the entire province. For example, instead of introducing or drawing tourists to a specific site, the provincial office can develop courses like “Gyeonggi Content Tour Curation Course” designed to attract local and foreign tourists. Through such storytelling, tourist attractions can appear more attractive and abundant. It is certainly important to develop new tourist resources, but we need a measure for fully activating existing tourism resources. This writer believes curated programs can be one.

To emphasize the importance of curation anew, we need curation for the MICE industry. This writer believes customized programs including well-planned curation would be great.
